Großer Tiergarten

The Großer Tiergarten is Berlin's central park, spreading over several square kilometers, more than a square mile, between the Brandenburg Gate and Zoo station. Originally a royal hunting ground, it was redesigned as a landscape park in the 18th century. Today it is the green lung of the inner city, with meadows, old trees, small lakes and winding paths.
The park is free and open, and it invites walking, cycling, picnicking and running. On warm days Berliners gather to grill on the lawns set aside for it. Scattered through the grounds are monuments, the Englischer Garten, and at its hub the Siegessäule. The Berlin Zoo sits along the southern edge.
Because it is so central, the Tiergarten combines easily with the Reichstag, the Brandenburg Gate or Potsdamer Platz. Families get playgrounds and wide open space to run around, and anyone looking for quiet can disappear onto the smaller paths deeper inside the park.
