Victory Column
A golden goddess of victory at the heart of the Tiergarten, with a viewing platform over the city.
The Siegessäule (Victory Column) stands on the Großer Stern traffic circle in the middle of the Tiergarten, and its gilded Victoria figure, which Berliners call "Goldelse," is a familiar city landmark. It went up in the 19th century to commemorate Prussian wars and was moved to its current spot during the Nazi era. Today it is best known as a viewpoint and a photo subject.
For a small admission fee you can climb the roughly 285 steps to the top. The platform just below the statue opens up a full circle of views over the Tiergarten, the axis running toward the Brandenburg Gate, and the sea of rooftops beyond. There is no elevator, and the stairwell is narrow, so skip it if you are uneasy with heights or tight spaces.
The column sits in the middle of a large traffic circle and is reached through pedestrian tunnels. All around it, the paths of the Tiergarten invite a walk, and the straight axis of the Straße des 17. Juni links the column directly to the Brandenburg Gate.
