Many consider the Gendarmenmarkt the most beautiful square in Berlin. It is framed by the neoclassical Konzerthaus at its center and by the German Cathedral and the French Cathedral at its ends, whose domed towers form a symmetrical ensemble. The square took shape in the late 17th century and is named after a regiment once stationed here.
Today the Gendarmenmarkt is above all a place to stroll and take photos. From the Schiller monument in front of the Konzerthaus you get classic postcard views. Concerts in the Konzerthaus and the viewing platform of the French Cathedral round out what is on offer, though individual areas may be closed at times for renovation.
In the run-up to Christmas the square hosts a well-known Christmas market. The surrounding streets around Friedrichstraße offer restaurants and cafés for a break. From the Gendarmenmarkt, the Holocaust Memorial and Unter den Linden are just a few minutes away on foot.
