Checkpoint Charlie
The former border crossing between East and West, today a symbol of the Cold War.
Checkpoint Charlie on Friedrichstraße was the best-known border crossing between East Berlin and the American sector during Germany's division. In 1961 Soviet and American tanks faced off here, making the spot an emblem of Cold War confrontation. Today a replica of the checkpoint booth, along with the famous "You are leaving the American Sector" sign, marks the location.
The site itself is freely accessible and heavily touristed. Souvenir stands and snack stalls line the crossing, giving the place a rather commercial feel. If you want to dig deeper into the history, the nearby Wall Museum and a free open-air exhibition with panels on the division are close by.
