Topography of Terror
A documentation center on the former Gestapo grounds tracing the history of Nazi terror.
The Topography of Terror stands on the grounds where the headquarters of the Gestapo, the SS and the Reich Security Main Office were located during the Nazi era. Opened in 2010, the documentation center uses photographs, documents and biographies to explain how the Nazi apparatus of terror worked and which crimes were directed from here. It is one of the most important sites of remembrance in Berlin.
The permanent exhibition, indoors and outdoors, is free and factual, without dramatization. A preserved section of the Berlin Wall runs along the open grounds, so two chapters of German history become visible in one place. Audio guides and tours add further depth.
The visit is demanding and serious, only partly suitable for children. Because of the density of information, allow yourself enough time. Its location near Checkpoint Charlie and the Gendarmenmarkt makes it possible to combine several historical stops in one day.
