The Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer (Berlin Wall Memorial) on Bernauer Straße is the country's central place of remembrance for Germany's division. Along a stretch of roughly 0.9 miles (1.4 kilometers) you can see an original segment of the Wall, the former death strip with a watchtower, and traces of the border installations. Unlike the photogenic chunks of Wall scattered around the city, this site shows the border as the layered system it actually was.
The memorial includes a documentation center with a viewing platform, the Window of Remembrance for the people who died at the Wall, and the Chapel of Reconciliation. Panels and audio stations along the path tell stories of escapes, tunnels and daily life next to the border. The outdoor area is freely accessible, and the documentation center is free to enter as well.
This is a place for a quiet, reflective walk away from the heaviest tourist traffic.
