Museum Island, on the northern part of the Spree island, brings together five major institutions: the Altes Museum, the Neues Museum, the Alte Nationalgalerie, the Bode Museum and the Pergamon Museum. The ensemble was built in the 19th and early 20th centuries and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. Among its best-known treasures are the bust of Nefertiti in the Neues Museum and the collections of antiquities.
Each building has its own focus, from Egyptian art and classical antiquity to 19th-century painting. Some areas, including parts of the Pergamon Museum, are temporarily closed for renovation, so it pays to check current openings before you visit. Timed-entry tickets are recommended, as the museums are heavily visited.
For a relaxed visit there is rarely time for all five, so it makes sense to choose by interest. Around the island, the Lustgarten, Berlin Cathedral and the Spree promenade invite you to take a break. Museum Island is an ideal choice for a rainy day.
