Berlin Cathedral, on the Lustgarten across from Museum Island, is the city's largest Protestant church. The present building, in the style of the Italian High Renaissance, was erected between 1894 and 1905 under Kaiser Wilhelm II and restored over decades after war damage. Inside, the richly decorated sermon church and the Hohenzollern crypt with its many sarcophagi are especially impressive.
For a small admission fee you can climb the dome in addition to the church interior. The route leads up about 270 steps to a wide view of Museum Island, the TV Tower and the city center. If you are not steady on your feet, factor in the climb: there is no elevator to the dome.
The cathedral remains an active church, so it may close for services or concerts. The organ concerts are a highlight in their own right. Around the Lustgarten, a visit combines well with Museum Island and a stroll along the Spree.
