Berlin Zoo
Germany's oldest zoo, with great biodiversity in the middle of the western center.
The Zoologischer Garten Berlin is the oldest zoo in Germany, opened in 1844, and it keeps one of the most species-rich animal collections in the world. It sits at the edge of the Tiergarten in the western center, right next to Zoo station, which makes it about as easy to reach by public transit as anything in the city. Among other things, the zoo became internationally known through the polar bear Knut.
The grounds are large and laid out like a park, home to thousands of animals from elephants and giraffes to big cats and pandas. Historic animal houses such as the Elephant Gate and the antelope house give the place a particular charm. The aquarium sits directly next door, and combination tickets are available.
For a thorough visit, count on several hours up to half a day, especially with kids. Admission is charged, and family tickets and combination tickets with the aquarium are available. Because the location is so central, a zoo visit combines well with a stroll down the nearby Kurfürstendamm.
