Charlottenburg Palace, in the district of the same name, is the largest surviving palace complex in Berlin. It was begun in 1695 as a summer residence for Sophie Charlotte, wife of the future King Friedrich I, and expanded over the following centuries. After severe war damage it was painstakingly restored and today shows staterooms from the Baroque and Rococo periods.
Among the highlights are the Porcelain Cabinet, the Golden Gallery and the living quarters of the Prussian rulers. Depending on the option, tickets cover individual parts of the building or the entire complex. The expansive palace garden behind it, in French and English styles, is freely accessible and invites strolls along canals, meadows and small pavilions.
The palace lies a little outside the center but is easy to reach by U-Bahn. A visit combines well with the nearby collections around the Schlossplatz. For the garden and interiors together, plan for several hours.
