Kurfürstendamm
Berlin's most famous shopping boulevard in the west, with stores, cafés and the KaDeWe nearby.
The Kurfürstendamm, which Berliners shorten to Ku'damm, is the best-known shopping boulevard in the western half of the city. For about 2.2 miles (3.5 kilometers) it lines up fashion stores, flagship shops, cafés and restaurants. During the division of Berlin the Ku'damm was West Berlin's glittering shop window, and it is still a center of shopping and people-watching today.
The range runs from international chains to high-end boutiques, and it continues onto the adjoining Tauentzienstraße with the famous KaDeWe department store. The architecture is worth a look too, mixing ornate late-19th-century facades with modern buildings. On warm days the sidewalk cafés fill up fast.
At the eastern end of the Ku'damm stands the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche on Breitscheidplatz, a natural place to start or finish a stroll. There is nothing to pay, since this is a public street. For an easygoing afternoon of walking and browsing in the west of the city, the Kurfürstendamm is the obvious choice.
