Treptower Park
An expansive park on the Spree with the monumental Soviet War Memorial.
Treptower Park runs along the Spree in the southeast of Berlin and is one of the largest and oldest parks in the city. Laid out in the 19th century, it offers broad meadows, mature trees and long riverside paths. On summer days locals come here to walk, picnic and catch boat trips on the Spree.
Its best-known structure is the Sowjetisches Ehrenmal (Soviet War Memorial), a monumental complex honoring the Soviet soldiers who died in World War II. With its massive sculptures, sarcophagi and central soldier figure, it is an imposing and sober place. It is also one of the largest memorials of its kind anywhere outside the former Soviet Union.
In summer excursion boats depart from the park, and the small Insel der Jugend (Island of Youth) lies nearby. Treptower Park sits away from the central sights, but it rewards anyone who wants to combine greenery, the riverbank and history in one afternoon. Admission is free.
