Oberbaum Bridge
A striking brick bridge over the Spree connecting Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg.
The Oberbaumbrücke (Oberbaum Bridge) crosses the Spree between the neighborhoods of Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg, and its red brick towers make it one of the most recognizable bridges in Berlin. Built around 1900 in the North German brick Gothic style, it carries the U-Bahn on an upper deck and cars, bikes and pedestrians on the lower one. During the division of the city it served as a border crossing between East and West.
Today it is a favorite photo spot, especially at sunset, when the towers and an arriving subway train stand out against the evening sky. The bridge has become a symbol of the reunification of two districts that spent decades cut off from each other. The East Side Gallery is close by, so the two are easy to combine.
The bridge is free to walk across and easy to reach on foot or by U-Bahn. On the Friedrichshain side you step straight into the nightlife district around Warschauer Straße. Walking the Oberbaumbrücke is a satisfying way to move between two of Berlin's most talked-about neighborhoods.
