Tempelhofer Feld

Tempelhofer Feld is the former Tempelhof airport, closed in 2008 and used as a public open space since 2010. With its broad runways and meadows it is one of the largest inner-city open spaces in the world. Berliners voted in a referendum to prevent development, so the area remains preserved as a park.

On the former runways you'll find cyclists, skaters, kitesurfers and joggers, while the meadows are used for barbecues, picnics and community gardening. There is a community garden, bird-protection areas and plenty of room for kites and sport. The wide horizon and the striking terminal building give the place a special, almost surreal atmosphere.

The field is free to enter but has fixed opening hours that change with the seasons. Bringing your own food and drink is wise, as the grounds are very large and not continuously served by cafés. For families and anyone who wants to experience Berlin's laid-back side, Tempelhofer Feld is a rewarding destination.
