Berlinale
Berlin's international film festival in February, one of the largest in the world, with the Golden Bear as its top prize.
Every February, the Berlinale makes Berlin the center of the film world for about ten days. As one of the three most important festivals anywhere, alongside Cannes and Venice, it screens hundreds of films from more than a hundred countries, from the main competition for the Goldener Bär (Golden Bear) to experimental strands and audience sections.
What sets it apart from other festivals is that it is deliberately built for the public rather than only for the industry. A large share of tickets goes to regular moviegoers, so visiting during the festival actually means you can get into screenings. Potsdamer Platz is the hub with the red carpet, and further venues are scattered across the city. Popular screenings sell out quickly, so be ready the moment advance sales open. Hanging around the entrances before a premiere is also the cheapest way in Berlin to spot a famous face.
