Carnival of Cultures
A colorful street festival around Pentecost, when Kreuzberg celebrates Berlin's diversity for four days with music, dance and a parade.
Every year at Pentecost, the long spring weekend seven weeks after Easter, the Karneval der Kulturen turns Kreuzberg into one huge open-air stage. The centerpiece is the parade on Pentecost Sunday, when thousands of participants from well over a hundred countries move through the streets in elaborate costumes with drum corps, floats and dance troupes.
Around the parade, a multi-day street festival takes over Blücherplatz with stages, food stalls from all over the world and a loose, peaceful crowd. The whole thing is essentially Berlin explaining its own multicultural identity to itself, and it is one of the largest events of its kind in Germany. If you prefer some breathing room, come early in the day, because the route gets packed by the afternoon. Admission is free.
