Spandau

Spandau lies on the western edge of Berlin and to this day likes to see itself as a town of its own. At its center is the well-preserved old town with a pedestrian zone, half-timbered houses and the Gothic Nikolaikirche. Its landmark is Spandau Citadel, one of the best-preserved Renaissance fortresses in Europe, which today houses museums, concerts and a lookout tower. Around the Havel there is plenty of water and greenery.

For food, Spandau is fairly down-to-earth, with cozy eateries and cafés in the old town and waterside excursion dining. If you're after history, quiet and family outings, you'll find a relaxed alternative to the hectic center here. For an overnight stay, the district is worthwhile above all for travelers with a car, or those willing to trade longer trips into the center for more peace and lower prices.
